Innovative Laser Gum Surgery
For patients with advanced periodontal (gum) disease, there are more treatment options available now than ever before. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), LANAP™ surgery is a popular alternative periodontal procedure preferred by many patients. LANAP™ stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. It is one of the most recent developments in periodontal therapy, offering patients the option of laser gum surgery with less pain and recovery time.

It’s estimated that roughly 80-85% of people will experience some form of gum disease within their lifetimes, no matter how much they keep up with preventative care. All too often, the warning signs of gum disease go unnoticed. If you’ve experienced bleeding gums, loose or sensitive teeth, or persistent bad breath, these are all signs for concern. Ignoring gum disease for too long can lead to other more severe health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and strokes. This procedure aids in the regeneration of gum tissue and new bone growth.
The Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure utilizes the patented PerioLase MVP-7™ Nd:YAG laser. This FDA-approved laser uses digitally-controlled pulse durations down to microseconds for one of the most precise laser gum surgery options yet. The laser’s wavelength passes through water and the minerals found in tooth enamel before being absorbed by the body’s hemoglobin and melanin. Because it can penetrate up to 4mm into the gums’ surface, it can kill harmful bacteria directly at the source. Once this bacteria is removed, the hemoglobin forms a clot, making tissue regeneration possible.
By targeting the bacteria and diseased gum tissue directly, LANAP™ surgery is safe and effective without damaging surrounding healthy gum tissue. This state-of-the-art periodontal procedure makes it possible for the body to regenerate gum tissue without resorting to surgical sutures or scalpels. No wonder it’s preferred by so many patients with advanced periodontal disease. There are several steps involved in the LANAP™ procedure, but we’ll go over them in more depth with you during your consultation.
Aside from the obvious benefit of being an alternative to traditional invasive surgery, laser gum surgery has many benefits, including:
- Reduced bleeding, pain, swelling, and sensitivity
- Minimal post-treatment downtime
- Regeneration of healthy gum tissue
- Reduced gum and bone loss
- Fewer risks of post-treatment gum infections
- Comfortable, convenient treatment time
Patients seeking LANAP™ surgery should expect to visit their dentist’s office at least twice for the most effective periodontal treatment. We typically focus on one side of the mouth at a time to minimize the amount of discomfort or downtime after the procedure. The two appointments are usually scheduled within a week of each other, and each appointment may take up to two hours to complete. When compared to the alternatives such as bone grafting or guided bone regeneration, LANAP™ post-op care is comfortable and convenient. Most patients resume work and normal activities quickly.
Patients may experience slight gum discoloration and mild soreness for the first few days after surgery, but over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen should alleviate it. You’ll need to stick to a soft diet and wear a splint while your mouth is healing, and we’ll likely ask you to refrain from brushing or flossing the first 7-10 days. We may have to adjust your bite a few times during follow-up visits, and routine periodontal cleanings may be required every three months to promote healing.
Specific insurance coverage will vary by provider, but most dental insurance carriers cover periodontal procedures at least partially if not entirely. Simply Beautiful Smiles accepts many dental insurance plans. We also offer financing options through CareCredit and a dental discount plan with extended payment options for up to 60 months to make our services more affordable for patients. Please contact your insurance provider or dentist for more details about your coverage of LANAP™ costs.
